Crown Heights Historic District, Brooklyn NY
2 Family Limestone Townhouse

Located in the Crown Heights North historic district, this charming, landmarked four story limestone townhouse has been lovingly maintained over the years. The home boasts over 4,000 sq ft and is a legal 3 family arranged as a 2 family with a garden level unit and a triplex above. On the garden level, there is a living/bedroom, kitchen and full bathroom with a laundry room and access to the backyard. Above lies a triplex featuring a parlor, 5 bedrooms, a family room, 3 full bathrooms, one on each floor and a kitchen. Heavy hard woods are intermixed with period details inclu...ding original parquet floors, pier mirror, crown moldings, bay windows and decorative fireplaces. Additionally, the home features both a front and rear yard, accessible from the adjacent west facing corridor. History: This group of Romanesque Revival style row houses was designed by architect Albert E. White and built c.1893 for builder John A. Bliss at a time when improvements in transportation hastened the construction of hundreds of exceptionally fine brick and stone row houses, as well as some freestanding mansions, in the Crown Heights area. Albert E. White designed several rows of houses in the district. These buildings are characterized by asymmetrical designs, rough-faced stone, arch-headed windows and projecting bays. They were built in an A-B-C-D-C-B-D-A with a stoop variation in the A buildings. White had his office in Brooklyn from at least 1890 through around 1905. This was at a crucial period in the development of neighborhoods like Bedford, which includes modern day Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, the St. Marks District, Stuyvesant Heights, Park Slope, and other later brownstone neighborhoods. Except for the slow-down during the Panic of 93, real estate was booming, and speculative row houses for both one and two families were going up on almost every block. White was one of the more prolific architects in Phase I of the Crown Heights North HD.
